First Friday Best Bets!

January 6, 2012

So my two faves for this Friday are:

Art After Dark at the Bookshelf – this month it’s a discussion of the origins of Jazz music – what could be more hip, I ask?? Led by Michael Greg, a Jazz musician at FSU, it’s sure to expand your mind + your knowledge of this great musical form. There’s also a photo exhibit by Emily Rhea.
6:30-8:00, $5pp, includes wine + cheese

And the second? All this weekend Liam’s you can order a charcuterie plate and add a cheese plate for just $10. That’s pretty much dinner for me + the hubbs! Plus…. they’re updating their wine + beer list for the new year, so ALL beer is $4 and ALL wine by the bottle is 30% off. Did you know you can always buy beer + wine to take home?

And be sure to walk around the corner {well, 2 corners} to George + Louie’s…. where you can now use a CREDIT CARD!!! Who thought this day would ever come? You can use them at G+L and at Rose City Takeout – Tville is getting with the times!

Don’t forget to bring one for the chipper tomorrow! Take your once-live Christmas tree for recycling – details here.

Happy New Year!

December 24, 2011
TCA, students present 'Everything Seuss'

Staff report

THOMASVILLE — Thomasville Center for the Arts (TCA), with Thomasville Community Resource (TCRC) students, home-schooled students, Favor Christian Academy students and TCA Art in the Afternoon students, along with Baby Seuss students, presented its Fall Semester performance and exhibit on Tuesday.

TCA’s mission to share the arts was apparent as more than 80 children presented a semester’s worth of visual and performing arts for their family and friends. These students created artwork, acted and sung their way through a series of beloved Dr. Seuss books. The art classes created the back drops, stage props and exhibit art while the theatre arts and vocal imagination students learned the process of theatre production, with script memorization and voice while entertaining the audience with their presentation called “Everything Seuss.”

The auditorium was nearly filled to capacity for the performance consisting of the Dr. Seuss books: The Places You Go, The Thinks You Will Think, The Sneeches, Horton Hears a Who, The Lorax and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

“Dr. Seuss is both the author and illustrator of his books, so he encompasses both literary and visual arts while also showing how artists use their art as their voice to communicate their thoughts and feelings” said Mary Oglesby, director of Education and Outreach. “Dr. Seuss said, ‘Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.’”

About Thomasville Center for the Arts

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) – The walls of the Thomasville Center for the Arts will ring with caroling and beautiful holiday music at Saturday's Christmas at the Center. "We are so fortunate to have a wonderful town like Thomasville that does support the art programs. The programs in the schools as well as the center. Music, there is performing arts all over the town," said Marketing Director Bonnie Hayes.

This fundraiser includes Breakfast with Santa, holiday portraits, and afternoon tea. "The ballet girls from the South Georgia Performing Arts Nutcracker will be there having a nice beautiful traditional tea for mothers and daughters or boys if they want to come too," said Hayes.

While waiting for their picture with Santa, kids can enjoy story time with Mrs. Claus or add candy to a life size gingerbread house.

Organizers say art events like this benefit a child's mental growth. "We know that the children who are supported through the arts do well statistically in school so we just hope that people come in, embrace the arts, and just reap the rewards throughout their life," said Hayes.

So Saturday at TCA you can stroll the holiday-decked halls, taking in the Christmas splendor, and create unforgettable Christmas memories.

The music, performances, and children's Christmas crafts are free for the public to enjoy from 9 am to 4 pm.

Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival Celebrates 16 Years

Staff Writer
CNHI

THOMASVILLE — Each year, the red hills of Thomasville provide the perfect haven for nature-lovers and sportsmen alike. Our many hunting plantations boast a fine population of quail, and our wetlands are home to more than 100 species of wildlife; just two reasons why the best sporting and wildlife artists flock to the Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival in Thomasville.

With a reputation for providing outstanding hospitality and unparalleled talent, the Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival has become one of America’s premier wildlife and sporting art festivals. On Nov. 19 and 20, more than 75 nationally-acclaimed artists from throughout North America will showcase their work for the festival’s 16th annual event.

“The quality of artwork has been tremendous each year,” Dr. Beckey Malphus, Festival Chairperson said. “We not only create a fabulous art show with diverse subject matter and price, but also provide dynamic and entertaining activities for all ages.”

Serving as this year’s featured painter, is world-renowned artist John Seery-Lester. His distinguished wildlife and landscape work depicts large mammals, birds of prey, magnificent underwater creatures and environmentally sensitive tableaus. Seery-Lester is a master in the art of plein air painting and travels throughout America creating his works of art. Most recently, he has resurrected his past fascination with the world of figurative portraits and nostalgic paintings. Seery-Lester currently resides in Florida with his wife and fellow wildlife artist, Suzie, who is also a participating artist in this year’s festival.

Award winning artist, Karryl, was selected as PWAF’s featured sculptor. As one of the most original artists in her field, Karryl’s work has been featured in many invitational and juried shows across the country. Her monumental sculptures have adorned parks and many private homes. Capturing the spirit of the moment while working with a loose style, Karryl enjoys observing and interacting with her subjects. Her life is split between a residence in western Pennsylvania and a studio in Loveland, Colo.

Each year, the festival grows with the addition of many new artists, exciting demonstrations and extraordinary events. Stroll through over 45,000 square feet filled with amazing artwork and meet talented artists and crafters who are among the best of the best in their field. Ranging from New York to New Mexico, more than 70 painters, sculptors, master crafters, carvers, photographers and jewelers will showcase their work during the festival.

New this year, Georgia Naturalist Steve Scruggs, “The Snakemaster,” will present an exciting, interactive wildlife demonstration. Back by popular demand, The Center for Wildlife Education’s Birds of Prey demonstration will take flight during the festival, as well as many other exciting lectures and attractions like the Wild Game Cooking Challenge, Hunting Dog Breeds Exhibition and much, much more. Also a highly anticipated demonstration now in its second year, observe featured artist, John Seerey –Lester as he completes a painting en plein air of Thomasville’s beloved Big Oak.

“This festival is another great event for the proud city of Thomasville. The artists and exhibitors are world class and the proceeds go towards important programs at the Center,” said Gates Kirkham, Festival Vice-Chair. “While it is a great family outing on Saturday and Sunday, more importantly, it is a fantastic opportunity to acquire some spectacular, original artwork while benefiting the Center."

An annual highlight for the Thomasville and Thomas County community, PWAF draws visitors from all over the U.S. and Canada. Proceeds generated from the festival support art and education programs for children and adults at the Thomasville Center for the Arts. “The Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival is a fantastic event that has truly grown in popularity over the years. The festival, along with its many talented artists, attracts visitors from across the region and beyond,” said Lori Everett, Special Events Director. “It’s a tradition for Thomasville and we couldn’t possibly be more proud of our enthusiastic committee, volunteers, supporters and underwriters.”

PWAF is the second largest wildlife festival of its kind located within the Southeast. “The entire weekend is packed with art and entertainment for the entire family. This is my favorite weekend of the year,” said Malphus. For more information about the Plantation Wildlife Arts Festival, visit www.pwaf.org or call Thomasville Center for the Arts at 229.226.0588.
