Distinctive local art, food & music festival launches in downtown Thomasville
THOMASVILLE, Ga–It’s a creative collaboration. New southern food mixes with the soulful sounds of southern Americana music in an urban, outdoor setting. It’s downtown. It’s distinctive. It’s Due South and it’s coming to Thomasville on Friday, April 20, 2012.
Thomasville Center for the Arts in partnership with Thomasville Entertainment Foundation and Thomasville National Bank present Due South, a celebration of the authentic southern connection between land, art and tradition. The rich sights, sounds and tastes of the new south will fill the night air with Artist Denise Choppin’s dreamily-evocative art works on exhibit, toe-tapping music performed by the New 76ers from Tallahassee, Florida and the Blue Dogs, of Charleston, South Carolina and a hand-picked bunch of food choices created by local chefs and restaurants.
Set in and around Building 209, in the heart of Downtown Thomasville (Formerly the Coca-Cola bottling plant, 209 West Remington Avenue), look for Due South gates to open at 5:30 p.m.- rain or shine. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs. Vendors will be on-site to provide a variety of food choices and beer by the cup for purchase. The New 76ers will play at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Blue Dogs at 8:00 p.m.

Sponsors will be invited to the VIP party which includes locally grown and produced foods prepared by local chefs, specialty beverages and reserved seating.
Making their first appearance in Thomasville, roots-rockers the Blue Dogs are bringing their distinctive bluegrass-based, southern-americana sound to our area. Midwest Record Recap calls them a “Funtastic outing that simply lets the good times roll without pretense or affect”. Formed in 1987 by longtime friends and fellow cub scouts, Hank Futch and Bobby Houck, the band boasts 25 years of playing, 9 CD’s and 2 DVD’s.
Michele Arwood, Executive Director of the Thomasville Center for the Arts says “Community participation in Due South preserves the rich musical traditions of the south, celebrates the food of the new south and promotes our shared artistic heritage. Community support for Due South also funds youth music and arts education and enrichment”. In it’s inaugural year, Due South 2012, promises to set the tone for an expanded event in 2013, with live music planned at multiple venues throughout Downtown.

Other hot tickets coming up? This Saturday nite is the grand finale of the TCA Indie Film Series. This movie is less documentary-style than most of the others and more story-like {watch the trailer here}. It’s about the North GA man who was supposed to be cremating bodies, but wasn’t. Very Southern Gothic, and, well, that’s right up my alley.

Easter’s right around the corner + I can’t wait to show you what’s popping up in my favorite places around town.
But first! This Thursday you can be a part of the new Tower at Archbold in the form of art! The Center for the Arts is hosting Art Off the Wall {at The Center} – an interactive event where you can purchase art in honor of someone and that art will hang in the new North Tower at Archbold, inspiring generations of Thomasville patients. What a great way to give back to the community and to be able to see the tangible evidence of your contribution. Plus, you can bring something from your personal art collection to trade with others for something that’s new to you. Sounds like fun! More info + registration here.

Groups Seeking Regional Work For Artwalk
By Andy Meek
Downtown businesses have the space. Now all they need are the artists to fill what will essentially be pop-up galleries around the city’s core.
The Downtown Memphis Commission and Downtown Neighborhood Association are preparing to launch “Unveil Downtown,” a 20-day so-called “artwalk” Downtown that will showcase the work of 20 artists from across the region.
That work will be displayed in exhibit spaces in 20 Downtown restaurants and retail businesses. Each artist will be allowed to exhibit and sell eight to 10 pieces of artwork and get to keep 100 percent of the proceeds of any sales.
Selected artists will be required to donate one piece of their work for an online auction that will raise money for the Downtown Neighborhood Association.
Leslie Gower, vice president of marketing and communications for the Downtown Memphis Commission, said artists chosen for the inaugural artwalk will be offered exhibit space in businesses all within a walkable distance of each other. She got the idea from a similar program done in Thomasville, Ga.
“This is a program done by the Thomasville Center for the Arts,” she said. “It’s been incredibly successful for their businesses. Their donations go back to the art center, but ours are going to the DNA, because we’re trying to make the DNA stronger. They are our loudest voice for Downtown, so we need to help them get as strong as they can, so that when we have legislation and other things coming up, we can rely on them to help be that voice.
THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) – A South Georgia hospital is partnering with an arts center to help style its new facility. On March 15, folks will have the opportunity to purchase the art which will hang at Archbold's new North Tower. This "Art Off the Wall" event, hosted by the Thomasville Center for the Arts, will feature 13 original pieces and 120 prints. Each piece will be displayed in the hospital with a recognition plate showing who donated the piece.

TCA, students present 'Everything Seuss'
Staff report
THOMASVILLE — Thomasville Center for the Arts (TCA), with Thomasville Community Resource (TCRC) students, home-schooled students, Favor Christian Academy students and TCA Art in the Afternoon students, along with Baby Seuss students, presented its Fall Semester performance and exhibit on Tuesday.
THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) – The walls of the Thomasville Center for the Arts will ring with caroling and beautiful holiday music at Saturday's Christmas at the Center. "We are so fortunate to have a wonderful town like Thomasville that does support the art programs. The programs in the schools as well as the center. Music, there is performing arts all over the town," said Marketing Director Bonnie Hayes.
This fundraiser includes Breakfast with Santa, holiday portraits, and afternoon tea. "The ballet girls from the South Georgia Performing Arts Nutcracker will be there having a nice beautiful traditional tea for mothers and daughters or boys if they want to come too," said Hayes.
While waiting for their picture with Santa, kids can enjoy story time with Mrs. Claus or add candy to a life size gingerbread house.
Organizers say art events like this benefit a child's mental growth. "We know that the children who are supported through the arts do well statistically in school so we just hope that people come in, embrace the arts, and just reap the rewards throughout their life," said Hayes.
So Saturday at TCA you can stroll the holiday-decked halls, taking in the Christmas splendor, and create unforgettable Christmas memories.
The music, performances, and children's Christmas crafts are free for the public to enjoy from 9 am to 4 pm.

Sit down for a creative conversation
THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - Supporting the arts, especially during difficult economic times, was the topic of discussion at today's "Creative Conversation."
The Thomasville Center for the Arts partnered with Americans for the Arts to host "Building a Vital Community."
More than 30 representatives from local businesses showed up to the adult art programming studio to discuss challenges facing the arts in Thomasville. "In a recent study they found we have an economic impact of $2.8 million in our town so really the arts are not too expensive, it's too expensive to let them go," said Marketing Director Bonnie Hayes.
Creative Conversations are part of National Arts and Humanities Month, the nation's largest collective annual celebration of the arts.
